Sometimes the First Helper is simply the person who hears you
NBC10 Philadelphia reported that several Good Samaritans and a police officer lifted a car to free a woman trapped underneath after an e-bike collision in Prospect Park.
The story is powerful because the first response was deeply ordinary people nearby heard a person in distress and moved toward her.
That is the First Helper idea. Before titles, uniforms or systems matter, somebody has to notice, act and begin the handoff to formal care.
The same moment can also create an information problem. A stranger may know how to call 911 or help physically, but they may know nothing about the person who should be contacted, what emergency information the person chose to make available, and what context might be useful once professionals arrive?
Scan If Hurt™ lets an individual connect chosen emergency contacts and information to a scannable Safety ID. It does not replace rescue skills, 911, police, EMS or medical care.
The Prospect Park rescuers deserve the credit for what they did. Their actions are also a reminder that any of us can become someone's First Helper before we know anything about the person we are trying to help.
