The emergency starts before the ambulance arrives

River Valley Radio reported that a Russellville e-bike rider was seriously injured after a collision and later transferred by air ambulance. The report says the driver and passenger of the vehicle immediately called 911 and provided basic life support while waiting for firefighters.

That detail matters because it shows where emergency response often really begins: with the people who are already there.

Before firefighters or paramedics reach the scene, a First Helper may be calling 911, controlling a hazard, providing basic aid or simply keeping the injured person safe.

They may also know almost nothing about the person they are helping.

Scan If Hurt™ lets an individual connect chosen emergency contacts and other information to a scannable Safety ID. The source does not establish that such information was missing in this case, and the tool would not replace the actions the motorists, firefighters, EMS or hospital teams performed.

The preparedness lesson is that both action and information can matter in the minutes before EMS — and neither should depend on the helper already knowing the person.
