Safety has a layer that begins after the crash

KGET reported that a man riding an electric bicycle died after a collision with a utility bucket truck at Kern and Tenth streets in Taft, California. Taft Police said the investigation is ongoing and that alcohol or drugs did not appear to be factors in the preliminary investigation.

A fatal incident should not be turned into a product claim. Nothing reported establishes that personal emergency information was missing, and no information tool can be presented as something that would have prevented the collision or changed the outcome.

What the story can do is remind riders and families that safety has more than one layer.

Road awareness, equipment, traffic rules and responsible riding are prevention layers. 911, EMS and medical care are response layers. Personal emergency-information readiness is another, narrower layer that begins when the person involved may be unable to answer for themselves.

Scan If Hurt™ gives an individual a way to connect chosen emergency contacts and other information to a scannable Safety ID. Its role is limited: make information the person selected easier to reach during an emergency.

That is not the central issue in the Taft investigation. It is a separate question riders can solve calmly before the next ride rather than during the worst moment.
