Emergency independence is part of leaving home
PEOPLE reported that a University of Utah student died after an electric-scooter accident during the student's first week on campus. The university has not publicly released the student's identity, and the cause of the accident was not disclosed.
That privacy and uncertainty matter. This is not a story to turn into a claim about a different outcome.
It can, however, remind families of a transition that happens when a young adult leaves home. Parents may still know every important detail, but the student is now moving through a community where roommates, classmates, bystanders and responders may not.
An emergency-information plan should reflect that independence. Who does the student want contacted? What information do they choose to make available? Can that plan stay with them rather than only with a parent hundreds of miles away?
Scan If Hurt™ lets the individual connect chosen emergency contacts and information to a scannable Safety ID. It does not prevent micromobility accidents or replace campus procedures, 911, EMS or medical care.
The point is simple: when a student moves away from home, preparedness needs to move with the student too.
