Knowing what you ride is step one. Knowing what information goes with you is another.

WRAL reported that an e-bike rider suffered significant injuries after colliding with a car on East Williams Street in Apex, North Carolina.

Apex police used the incident to emphasize a growing issue: not every electric two-wheeled vehicle is legally an e-bike. Depending on speed, power and design, different rules can apply.

That is a prevention and compliance question. Riders should understand what they own, wear appropriate protective equipment and follow the rules for that vehicle.

Information preparedness addresses another moment. If a serious incident occurs, what emergency contacts or other person-level information has the rider chosen to make available?

Scan If Hurt™ provides a scannable Safety ID connected to that chosen information. It does not classify vehicles, enforce rules or replace helmets, 911, EMS or medical care.

Good preparation can address both questions without confusing their jobs.
